My Response to a Dhimmi
Over at The Left Coaster, I made the following reply to a dhimmi by the nom de plume of Parallel Universe. He wrote:

"Iraqi nationals fighting a foreign occupier of their country are hardly terrorists."

I replied:

The Iraqis who are fighting the Coalition are either Saddamite Sunnis who don't want to see Kurds or moderate Shiites gain any power or hardline Shiites who want to introduce a mullahcracy like their coreligionists in Iran. Are you defending the rights of these two groups to kill Americans and our allies? Do you believe that the kind of government they want to establish is one that will respect human and civil rights? If not, then what, exactly, are you defending?

Useful to the Mahdis and the Saddamites are the many foreign fighters who are seeping into Iraq: jihadis and mujahadeens who practice terrorism against everyone, including the future leaders of a free Iraq. Are you also defending their right to kill our men and women? Are you like that jar of rancid pus (Michael Moore) who is rooting for our defeat and who calls these psychopaths brave resistance fighters? They are detonating cars full of explosives in crowded areas where men and women are trying to find jobs and get on with their lives. Is that brave? Do you have a conscience?

At some point, even anti-war Leftists have an intellectual obligation to think about what they are supporting. No one really doubts that the goal of a free Iraq is the promotion of the human and civil rights that its people were denied for decades under Ba'athist rule. Why is that important to Americans? Because it addresses the root causes of the problem of Islamofascism ---be it stateless terrorism in support of theocratic fantasies or totalitarian oppression of Islamic nations. A liberated Middle East is a peaceful Middle East interested in free trade and cultural exchange in the widest sense. This is a worthy goal. Who are you to stand in the way? All you have is empty, reflexive anti-Bush bullshit infesting your mind.

Remember: Nick Berg lost his head because terrorists wanted to incite his father into trumpeting their cause to the Western world. They succeeded. They killed Michael Berg's son because they knew what a goddamned dhimmi he is.

The wages of appeasement is death.

Did you miss the parts about "foreign occupier" and "their country"? Let's visit that parallel universe and imagine, I don't know... say... 2 million Chinese troops landed in America, moved into our palaces, chased down our emperor, told us our industries would be sold off, and brought in deeply corrupt China Oil to manage the Texas fields for our "benefit" (nudge, nudge, wink, wink). What then would be our responsibility as patriotic Americans?

Your hypothetical is gibberish because America is a free and prosperous society, whereas Iraq was neither while under Saddam. And the whole world (via the UN) said on MANY occasions that Iraq was a bad actor and posed serious threats to the stability of the region and the world, in general. Which is why, over the past 14 years or so, there has been a consensus that Saddam should be brought to heel.

Now, for political reasons and out of mere pique, the anti-Bush Eurocowards and domestic Leftists have withdrawn their support of action against Saddam. Their reasons are pure @#%$!, and may even be motivated by greed (see the UN oil-for-food debacle). These same people may now see Uncle Sam and the @#%$! cowboy from Crawford as threats to world peace, but that's because they are idiots who do not remember (or choose not to remember) History and all the very great and good things America has done for the world. We don't have to apologize for who we are: our goodness is demonstrated throughout the world every day.

America is exceptional in its moral and military might. China isn't going to come mess with us because our house, no matter what the lunatics on the Left believe, IS in order. And if we take it as our duty to put other countries' houses in order for the sake of peace and prosperity, then that's just something that people are going to have to deal with.

Most Iraqis wanted Saddam out. You KNOW the Kurds did. You KNOW the Marsh Arabs and the great majority of Shiites, too, wanted that madman and his psychopathic sons OUT of their lives. We have DONE that. And we are doing much else besides. Try to remember what good we have done.

TP- You need to do some reading on this subject. Your post reflects all the subtlety and nuance of a brickbat. Your straw man "left" hardly exists. Most of us were 100% in favor of the removal of Saddam (as I had been since 1975), but 100% opposed to the US taking of Iraq.

Here, read this bit of an interview with the producer of a new film called About Baghdad. The concensus there is that it was "our goodness" that schooled Saddam! Give a shot at processing that--and see if you can do it without falling off the deep end. -DB

SINAN ANTOON: Well we spent three weeks ... -- literally 7:00 in the morning to 7 at night before the curfew -- we just spent basically going around Baghdad, interviewing...Iraqis from all walks of life and basically asking them how they felt about the legacy of living under Saddam?s dictatorship and going through three wars, sanctions and how they feel about the U.S. And the results...show just the complexity that goes beyond the Manichean view that Bush wants us to believe about Iraqis either being Saddam-lovers or U.S.-lovers and what we got from most if not all the Iraqis that, you know, their worldview is much more complicated than that--and as complicated as any other human being. ... We also went around the streets and had spontaneous interactions with people. And one of them, I believe, a man on the street,... what he believes the whole relationship and the complexity of what has happened that Saddam, you know, having gone, that the student has gone but now the master is here and that that summarizes everything for him.

So that's your ace in the hole, right? No Great Power can triangulate or treat the enemy of its enemy as a friend anymore because, someday, some clever types may stand up and pronounce that Great Power as a hypocrite for having sent the now-betrayed friend down the road to becoming its enemy.

Well, if Carter hadn't been such a ninny back in 1979 when Islamofascism first fired its shot across our bow, things might be different today. But we failed to meet that challenge and we did, indeed, put Iraq to considerable good use (as they did us). No apologies, though. They went off the script and now we're back in re-write.

Hey! This is progress! You are finally starting to realize the true nature of the secret policy morass the US has brought on itself in the ME/S Asia. You now accept that the US inspired and assited in the armament of Saddam, as you should because it's the truth. Of course, blaming Carter for it all is quite interesting, since 1977 is about the year that Osama's brother and brother-in-law first invested in W's failed Arbusto oil company. I wouldn't let Reagan off the hook too fast either, as it was Reagan policy that built the Saudi-Egypt-connected anti-Soviet mujaheddin forces, out of which your "Islamofascists" sprang.
